民国初年，一处封闭的桃源镇上总有人离奇死亡，保卫团的范五九一次次赶赴死亡现场调查，可每次都与真相擦肩而过。范五九明白其背后必然另有缘由，但破案过程阻力重重，直到一日，一位外来“妖女”闯入禁地……。The story takes us back to 1889, in the wake of primary school teacher Louise Violet who is sent to a village in the French countryside to enforce Republic schooling (which is free, compulsory and secular).
