家住山沟沟里的九香（宋春丽 饰）是一个大字不识的老婆婆，她爹给她起了个中药名，从没上过学的老婆婆看着自己19岁时候拍的照片，思绪不觉回到了从前。那是她多么的漂亮，就像山坡上盛开的小花。可是她的命运多么凄凉，就像那难以下咽的黄连。暴雪压塌了她家的房子，压死她的丈夫。五个儿女哇哇大哭，苦命的女人独立担起养活孩子的重任。在漫长艰苦的旅途，丈夫生前好友老关开始帮着娘儿几个操持家务。患难相助，情格外真。九香似乎开始动心，可是风言风语和孩子们不懂事的言辞让她止步。
