影片根据Solomon Northup在1853年所著传记小说《黑奴十二年》（Twelve Years a Slave）改编。该作来自Solomon Northup亲身经历，他本是一个生活在纽约的自由的黑人，受过教育且已婚。随后遇到两个人，他们许诺在华盛顿帮他找一份工作，当Northup到了华盛顿才发现自己被诱拐绑架了，从此开始了他的奴隶生涯。经历多年磨难才依靠一个好心的加拿大人帮忙送信回家，经过一场诉讼，他重获自由。。Would you fall in love with a person whose voice you haven't heard for months, whose face you haven't touched, you can't smell, you don't even have the chance to pass by the same street, you can't even be in the same photo, who is miles away from you, even by seas, islands and cities。影片讲述生活在社交媒体时代的我们现在的故事，以及不同情侣各自不同的爱情故事；由《金福南杀人事件始末》《姐姐》《逃学威凤》的制片人韩万泽执导。。
