20世纪50年代末，已成为畅销作家的伊上洪作（役所广司 饰）百忙之中回到汤岛老家探望年迈的双亲。远在东京的家中，妻子美津（赤间麻里子 饰）、长女郁子（ミムラ 饰）和次女纪子（菊池亚希子 饰）正马不停蹄地帮他做着辅助工作，正值叛逆期的小女儿琴子（宫崎葵 饰）则有意无意反抗着父亲的强权。回到东京不久，老父亲隼人（三国连太郎 饰）的噩耗传来，留给洪作的是无法参透的万千情感。岁月流转，伊上一家时聚时散，女孩们渐渐长大，有着彼此的生活与心事，一向强势的洪作也渐渐尝到初老的孤独况味。与此同时，母亲八重（树木希林 饰）随着年岁的增长，记忆力逐渐衰退。一方面履行着身为人子的义务，一方面又因童年被母亲“抛弃”而心存芥蒂。万千情感之下，是永生无割舍的羁绊……
