1982年6月的一天，长春光机所副研究员蒋筑英（巍子 饰）因公前往成都出差。他和善地和妻子路长琴（奚美娟 饰）以及女儿告别。本以为是一次例同以往的公干，谁知却再也没有回到温暖的家中。未过几天，长琴接到长春光机所的通知，得知丈夫因病住院，急需她去长春护理。焦急的女子此时还不知晓，丈夫已在15号的那天病故了。怀着惴惴的心情，长琴踏上旅途，而与丈夫相守的往事如电影一般在头脑中回放。当年英气勃发的蒋筑英，为了学习光学从杭州来到长春，为钻研业务自学了五门外语。
