该剧以北海道郊区新设的儿童重症监护室（PICU＝Pediatric Intensive Care Unit）为舞台，当地由于地域广阔难以提供及时的医疗服务，医生们努力创建可以尽快救治患者的设施。吉泽亮饰演有些笨拙不成熟的年轻儿科医生志子田武四郎，他一直与母亲一起生活，与PICU医生植野元（安田显）相遇改变了他的人生。。该剧根据上世纪八十年代由首届茅盾文学奖获得者周克芹创作的小说《许茂和他的女儿们》为背景，续写了改革开放三十年来，许茂一家的生活变迁，展现出中国南方农村新时代的生活图景。一家人风雨坎坷三十年，他们的沧桑命运，他们的是非恩怨，他们的爱恨情仇以小见大的折射出新农村的新风貌。。Charlie goes to the movie and falls in love with a girl on the screen.
