原作是山崎丰子的｢两个祖国｣，是继1980年狮子的时代后，第二度以虚构人物做为主角。故事以日系美国人第二代兄弟为中心，描写其友人与家族在太平洋战争被分裂的悲剧。原作在执笔时取材相当严谨，内容提及日中战争与远东国际军事法庭等史实时都做过采访考证。故事的时代背景与和山崎女士另一部作品大地之子接近，类似于记实小说。是大河剧第一次以昭和时期为主题的作品，也是大河剧“近现代三部作”（另外两部是翌年的“春の波涛/春之波涛”、再翌年的“いのち/命”)里的第一部。。舒冉通过VR面试系统证明自己，并在系统中与前来拯救自己的总裁扮演的纸片人上演了一场在无脑霸总漫画里艰难求生的故事，两人也收获了意想不到的美好爱情。。
