This is exactly what the director is planning to achieve with this film| His journeys to Germany, Austria, Russia...。阿乔（叶童 饰）和母亲（冯宝宝 饰）一起过着相依为命的生活，然而不满母亲专横独断的作风，阿乔早早离开了母亲来到美国独自生活，并在美国结婚生子，一晃眼十多年过去。借着女婿回港讲学的机会，阿乔终于踏上了故土，见到了久违的母亲。阿乔满心愧疚，希望能够弥补这么多年来的亏欠，然而母亲的个性依然如故，两人之前的矛盾再度爆发。
在老伯（吴耀汉 饰）的调解之下，阿乔和母亲之间的误会消解了，老伯这么多年来一直孤身一人，个性温和善良，阿乔希望撮合他和母亲，使两位老人能够在晚年相互作伴。母亲和老伯之间其实互有好感，然而抵不住周遭的非议，两人在犹豫之中迟迟不愿向前迈进。。
